Historic City Centre of Piacenza
Piacenza is the ideal City for anyone who appreciates authentic artistic beauty and walking through the stately calm of a lovely, old city centre. You will be surrounded by old churches and elegant palazzos with magnificent colonnades and internal gardens. The real gems are the civic museums: the Ricci Oddi Modern Art Gallery, a fine collection of nineteenth-century Italian art, the Collegio Alberoni, the Farnese Palace and its Civic Museums, as well as other important private galleries.
As a natural crossroads connecting 4 different Regions, for centuries the City of Piacenza has been a strategic place for pilgrims passing through on their way to Rome, along the two most famous European pilgrim routes: the Via Francigena and the Via degli Abati.
The routes bear signs of Medieval times, with springs, fountains and resting places to be understood and admired at leisure, with the typical slowness of a journey on foot, which allows you to get to know the area, the history, the people, the past and the present.
The widespread heritage of the Piacenza area is made up of beautiful and important historical places, ideal for spending a weekend in search of art and good food; towns with stories to tell and ancient origins. Not to be missed is Bobbio with its Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge), the walled town of Vigoleno with its Romanic Saint George’s church, the medieval town of Castell’Arquato with the collegiate church of Saint Mary of the Assumption and the village of Grazzano Visconti with its artisan shops, entirely rebuilt at the start of the twentieth century.
There are over four hundred fortresses and castles throughout the Piacenza area. They bear witness to an important past that goes from the Middle Ages to the Guelphs and Ghibellines, the noble Sforza and Visconti families and the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. It is under this last name that the castles came together, now open to the public as stately residences, locations for receptions and parties and guided tours. The Farnese Palace military fortress in the city is also worth visiting.
